True Story, “Flag Day” Unsettles Father and Daughter

Directed by Sean Penn, Flag Day follows Jennifer Vogel, played by Dylan Penn, who comes to terms with her larger-than-life father. As a child, Jennifer marveled at his magnetizing energy and ability to make life feel like a grand adventure.

Yes. Dylan is Sean’s real-life daughter, which makes the production intriguing. She is a celebrity model whose international talent is huge.

Jennifer’s father taught her much about love and joy, but he also was the most notorious counterfeiter in US history. Based on a true story, Flag Day is an intimate family portrait of a young woman who struggles to rise above the wreckage of her past. At the same time, she reconciles the inescapable bond between a daughter and her father.

At the heart of the movie is a love story between a father and daughter. Sean Penn describes it, “a complicated one.” It is a story of one woman’s pursuit to find truth in her life after growing up in the shadow of her father’s criminality. We see the bonds of family ebb and flow with each truthful revelation and each destructive lie. This father-daughter story serves as a metaphor for a country that often cannot live up to its highest ideals.

A country that doesn’t follow through on its promises. Stoic imagery of flags waving and fireworks give way to darkened windows, disguises and eventually handcuffs and jail cells. Ultimately, it is a story of perseverance, of truth, and learning who you are in the shadow of someone else. It is a story of uncovering memories and examining those memories from a raw and vulnerable place.

The movie includes an impressive cast Josh Brolin, Norbert Leo Butz, Dale Dickey, Eddie Marsan, Bailey Noble, Hopper Jack Penn and Katheryn Winnick.

Monumental “Dune” Perspective Absolutely Timely and Startling

Based on Frank Herbert’s book and directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune follows Paul Atreides, played by Timothee Chalamet, who goes on a mythical and emotionally charged journey. Paul is a brilliant young man born into a destiny beyond his comprehension.

He travels to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure his family and people’s future. Malevolent forces explode into conflict over the pant’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s most significant potential. But it is those who can conquer their fear that will survive.

Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. Hans Zimmer composes the music for the science fiction film. The rest of the cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.

Absolutely Lowest But Good “Deadpool 2” Trailers and Poster

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 arrives with cafeteria chef Wade Wilson or Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds. Wilson survived a near-fatal bovine attack, though it disfigured him, and he still is trying to make his dream come true, becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender. While he is learning to cope with his lost sense of taste, he is still trying to add more spice to his life as he battles a sundry of squirrelly characters that make no sense.

Leitch directed Charlize Theron in the 2017 comedy-thriller Atomic Blonde, which I wrote about earlier. It seems he likes to direct movies that are not all that serious and have some over-the-top humor.

Josh Brolin also stars as Nathan Summers or Cable. He looks to be Deadpool’s nemesis. The trailers and clips below are crazy and weird, but that is how Deadpool movies play out on the screen, so enjoy them and try to figure out the storyline. I sure didn’t.

“Sicario 2: Soldado” Trailers, Featurette, and Poster

Directed by Stefano Sollima, Sicario 2: Soldado follows the drug war on the US-Mexico border, which has escalated as the cartels have trafficked terrorists across the US border. Federal agent Matt Graver re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro to fight the war. The movie stars Josh BrolinBenicio Del Toro, and Matthew Modine.

The featurette explains the movie and how the title relates to the storyline.

The third trailer shows more of what is going on in the story. It’s not as long, but it’s good.

The movie trailer tells more about the movie. My first thought was that he was trying to save the girl, which was intense.

I like the original movie with Emly Blunt, though the ending was empty with platitudes. Still, Blunt did a great job. I will continue to enjoy her films.
