Sinners

Vampires, Folklore, and Fear “Sinners”

Sinners with Michael B. Jordan

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners follows twin brothers, Smoke and Stack Moore, played by Michael B. Jordan.

A New Beginning in the Mississippi Delta

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, the twin brothers return to their hometown to start anew, only to discover a horrific evil awaiting them.

Themes of Identity and Cultural Heritage

The story takes place in 1932, during the Jim Crow era in Mississippi. The twins return home from working with Chicago gangsters. They set out to open a juke joint for their local Black community. Featuring music, dancing, gambling, and drinking, the club attracts people. The community fights vampires drawn to their cousin Sammie’s musical talent.

Why Sinners Stands Out as a Horror Film

This movie combines Southern Gothic horror with crime drama, blues music, and historical storytelling. Beyond its horror, Sinners delves into family, faith, identity, racism, cultural exploitation, and the power of music.

An impressive support cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller and Delroy Lindo.

Sinners won four Oscars, including Best Screenplay (Coogler), Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw), Best Original Score (Ludwig Goransson), and Best Actor (Jordan).

Other films directed by Coogler:

“BumbleBee” Trailers, Posters, Movie Clips & Featurettes

Directed by Travis Knight, BumbleBee takes place in 1987. The story introduces BumbleBee, voiced by Martin Short, who finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town.

Along comes, Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, befriends BumbleBee, battle-scarred and broken.

Knight started as an animator and directed the beautifully produced Kubo and the Two Strings.

The following movie clips show the relationship between Charlie and BumbleBee.  The relationship is endearing, and yet, on the edge because of the overall conflict, they will face soon.

The movie clip shows two transformers lying to John Cena’s character about Bumble Bee. It looks like the story is about the transformers, who are bad or evil, are trying to trick the people of Earth into helping them destroy Bumble Bee.

The next featurette tells the origin of Bumble Bee.  This is a period piece and refers to a time in history.   I believe John Cena plays a bad guy.

The featurette outlines Knight’s animation experience and how he develops a story into a movie.

This featurette is about the transformers triple changing, which means transformer, car, and spaceship. It is pretty cool to watch in this featurette and the top movie clip shows Agent Burns conversing with them about BumbleBee.

The second poster makes the movie more inviting because is not so serious or aloof as the first poster.

The second trailer shows what the kids and kids at heart get to see, which is transformers fighting to save the planet. This is so cool to watch because it is a girl who is befriending BumbleBee.

The movie trailer clearly has Knight’s touch. He’s added a little soul to the story. Having a female play the protagonist helps.

“Pitch Perfect 3” Trailers and Blu-Ray/DVD

Directed by  Trish Sie, the cast just keeps getting larger and larger with an impressive list of talent.

Now graduated from college and out in the real world where it takes more than a cappella to get by, the Bellas return in Pitch Perfect 3, the next chapter in the beloved series that has taken in more than $400 million at the global box office.

After the highs of winning the World Championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth.  But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.

The Blu-ray/DVD hit the streets, so if you missed the movie in theaters, and now you can buy the movie for real. The package includes new songs.

Comparing the Blu-ray cover with the movie poster,  the yellow background makes the movie seem lighter not as dark or foreboding.

Perhaps, shoppers are likely to pick up a lighter colored package than a darker one.
