Austrian Remake, “Goodnight Mommy,” Stars Naomi Watts

Written by Kyle Warren and directed by Matt Sobel, Goodnight Mommy is an English-language remake of the Austrian film of the same title.

The story follows twin brothers, played by Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti. They arrive at their mother’s country home, played by Naomi Watts, to discover her face covered in bandages.

She explains she needs to wear the dressings with her recent cosmetic surgery.

They immediately sense that something doesn’t add up because of her odd behavior, doing things their loving mother would never do. She sets strange new house rules, smokes in her bathroom, and secretly rips up a drawing they gave her.

As her behavior grows increasingly bizarre and erratic, a horrifying thought takes root in the boys’ minds. They have a sinking suspicion that the woman beneath the gauze, making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn’t their mother.

In Warren and Sobel’s version of the film, the fundamental theme is “the human need to be either the victim or the hero of one’s own story — never the villain.”

Compared to the original Austrian film relies on aesthetics and tone, the English remake focuses on reimagining character and psychology, emphasizing the drama over the horror elements.

“Some of the specific changes we made were to put one of the twin boys, Elias, at the center of the story, whereas the original largely treats the three main characters democratically,” explains Sobel.

They wanted to bring the audience into Elias’ experience, so they dramatized his thought processes. Another change was to create the role of Mother as not a monster but a flawed human being whose actions take on new meaning once the movie reveals the story’s core mystery.

Sobel and Watts weaved her performance to specific behaviors that make it clear there’s more going on than meets the eye. They made those moments vivid enough that when the viewer reaches the film’s end, they don’t need to return to the beginning immediately to understand what happened.

“Luce” Trailer and Poster

My interest in this movie started when I first saw the trailer on Facebook. I watched it muted because I didn’t want to be rude, playing the sound in public.

I saw a movie that I wanted to see.

The situation in the story is interesting because we appear to see a perfect student named Luce, played by Kelvin Harrison Jr. His teacher, Harriet Wilson, played by Octavia Spencer, suspects him to be violent.

Julius Onah co-wrote and directed Luce, a smart psychological thriller adapted from JC Lee’s play of the same name. Lee also co-wrote the screenplay with Onah.

Onah talked about collaborating with Lee on the screenplay, “Despite how different we are on some levels, we have a similar sensibility when it comes to storytelling and the way we want to explore ideas and issues. Neither of us want to tell stories that are prescriptive or didactic in how they explore complex social issues. We both want to ask people to consider their blind spots, and to recognize their experience of the world will never be identical with anyone else’s.”

An all-star high school athlete and accomplished debater, Luce is a poster boy for the new American Dream. As are his parents, played by Naomi Watts and Tim Roth, adopted him from a war-torn country a decade earlier.

When Luce’s teacher, Ms. Wilson, makes a shocking discovery in his locker, Luce’s stellar reputation comes into question. But is he really at fault, or is Ms. Wilson preying on dangerous stereotypes?

Watching the trailer, Onah creates an intense, multi-layered, and entertaining look at identity in today’s America.

“The Book of Henry” Trailer and Clips

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, The Book of Henry follows a single mother Susan Carpenter, played by Naomi Watts, works as a waitress alongside her feisty family friend Sheila.

Taking care of everyone and everything in his own way is Susan’s older son Henry, played by Jaeden Lieberher.

Protective of his brother and a tireless supporter of his mother who is constantly self-doubting herself, Henry blazes through the days like a comet. When Susan discovers that the family next door harbors a dark secret, she’s surprised to learn that Henry has devised a plan to help the young daughter, played by, Maddie Ziegler.

Colin T. Trevorrow is an American film director and screenwriter. He directed the indie film Safety Not Guaranteed, the blockbuster film Jurassic World, and Star Wars: Episode IX, with the latter being slated for a 2019 release. With these credits, you need to watch the behind the scenes clips of him direction Naomi and Jaeden.  He is very centered and confident.

The trailer tells an awesome story about a brave boy.

Here is the trailer, enjoy.

“The Glass Castle” Trailer and Clips

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton with a stellar cast, the movie is based on a book by Jeannette Walls.  The Glass Castle follows a woman’s life that gets turned upside down when her dysfunctional parents move to New York to live nearer to her.

The movie stars Brie Larson, who is from my hometown.  Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts,  and Max Greenfield join Larson.

The movie is being called a comedy-drama. I just hope it hits its mark.

Here is the final poster for the movie. I have also added a featurette that is pretty darn good.  Enjoy!
