“Being the Ricardos” Revealing Turmoil Direct From Aaron Sorkin

Sorkin has taken one of America’s funniest and most beloved TV couples, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, and turned it into a poignant story for a film. The Ricardos first appeared in the iconic sitcom I Love Lucy, which premiered in 1951.

In front of our TV sets, we saw a quintessential dizzy redhead and the charismatic Cuban bandleader, delighting record-breaking audiences each week. They’d see Lucy’s hare-brained schemes and hilarious antics.

Behind the scenes was a different story. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz faced problems that could have ended the successful show and their marriage. Kidman talks about Lucille Ball’s career and portrays her, “As an actress, she never really got a break when she was younger. Movies were not her métier. But that is part of what made her resilient. She, with Desi’s support and protection, reinvented herself as a comedy star. But it was all so tenuous and could be taken away by a couple of cheap headlines. That is still very relevant today.”

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, Being the Ricardos follows Lucille Ball, played by Nicole Kidman, and Desi Arnaz, played by Javier Bardem, as they face a crisis. They face the devastating fact that they most likely will end their careers and marriage. Lucy and Desi must deal with the impending threats of shocking personal accusations, political smears, and cultural taboos.

The film clip is like the trailer, but we see more of Kidman as Lucy and Bardem as Dezi.

We go behind the scenes of one of the most popular TV shows of our time, revealing a glimpse of the couple’s complex romantic and professional relationship. During one critical production week of their groundbreaking sitcom, “I Love Lucy,” we go into the writer’s room, onto the soundstage and behind closed doors with Lucy and Desi.

Having two Oscar winners play the lead roles of two influential personalities in the entertainment industry must be a dream come true for Sorkin.

The cast includes Jake Lacy, J. K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Tony Hale and Alia Shawkat.

Sorkin says, “Javier made it clear he wanted the part. And he is simply irresistible. I didn’t need to be told he’s a great actor. We were finishing casting during the COVID lockdown and he was so winning, even during Zoom meetings. That quality was essential for Desi because we asked the audience to accept such bad behavior from him. Until the day he died, he was intensely in love with Lucille Ball, but he came from a culture that defines manhood very narrowly. It was hard for Desi to be a second banana, and that ultimately killed their marriage.”

Bardem calls Sorkin’s script “a love letter to two resilient, creative human beings dealing with serious problems and trying to remain united through them,” adding, “It is a journey of pleasure and joy and laughter — a lot of laughter. There are great comic moments in it. But there are also dramatic, emotional moments that show that these people who were so loved and admired were just a couple of human beings with flaws — as we all are.”

The actor says it was typical for the cast to perform five or more pages of the writer’s notoriously precise dialogue daily. “There are always two or three or four things happening at the same time,” he says. “As a director, Aaron likes to work fast. He knows what he wants, which is a great thing, but he leaves you the room to play with it. And he gives you a lot of layers to work with.”

Despite the many personal and professional successes the couple achieves, Desi’s philandering threatens to destroy the couple’s marriage at the peak of their fame. “He wanted to help Lucille, protect her, hold her — not only because she was the star of the show but because she was his wife, the mother of his kids and an amazing, creative mind,” says Bardem. “But there were many things that he could have done better.”

It was Arnaz’s ambition and versatility that the actor says provided him with the most inspiration. “When we play real people, we want to get as close as we can to reality, but there’s a moment where you have to let that go,” he believes. “You have to express what the person is going through, not how he looks or speaks. Desi had a motor inside of him that constantly pushed forward, pushed not only himself but the show and the whole Desilu company.”

For the role of Arnaz, one of the rare Latinx talents to achieve stardom in television’s early days, the filmmakers cast Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. The actor had pursued the role for years before the film was green-lit.

Bardem describes his co-star, Kidman, as “generous, caring, organic, fun to work with, fun to watch, inspiring — and she makes it all look easy. She gives you everything, so you don’t have to hold anything back.”

“21 Bridges” Posters, Clips & Trailers

Directed by Brian Kirk, 21 Bridges follows an embattled NYPD detective, played by the late Chadwick Boseman. He is thrown into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers after uncovering a massive and unexpected conspiracy.

As the night becomes day, lines become blurred about who he is pursuing and who is in pursuit of him. The search intensifies when extreme measures prevent the killers from escaping Manhattan.

The authorities close all 21 bridges in and out of the island, preventing no entry nor exit from the fabled island.

Matthew Michael Carnahan and Adam Mervis wrote the movie. Carnahan’s credits include Lion for Lambs, World War Z, and Deepwater Horizon. Mervis is also an actor and a playwright. The film 21 Bridges appears to be his first produced screenplay.

The late Boseman starred in the Marvel movies from Black Panther to Avengers Endgame and played Jackie Robinson in 42.

Kirk’s credit includes episodic television such as Games of Thrones and Penny Dreadful. This movie appears to be his first feature movie as well.

The cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Sienna Miller, Stephan James, and J. K. Simmons. You might recognize Stephan James as the young man in love in If Beale Street Could Talk and the heartfelt veteran in Homecoming, starring with Julia Roberts.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the directing team and brothers who brought us four Marvel movies, including Avengers Endgame, produced The 21 Bridges.

The movie trailer is entertaining, like a short film with all the key players. The poster shows Roseman as the cop that criminals do not want to contend with and notice his eyes are two different colors.

SD Comic-Con trailer is long, with lots of features and details about the movie.

The third trailer takes on his journey through Manhattan. Boseman is intense and one tough dude.

These clips show how intense this movie can get. So, hang on tight and let the drama begin. Oh, there is a bit of eye candy for the girls in the third clip.

The following clip shows us another aspect of the story. I like the characterization and the conflict between these two cops.

“The Front Runner” Trailer, Featurette & Posters

Directed by Jason Reitman, The Front Runner is based on a true story starring Hugh Jackman. Jackman plays the charismatic politician Gary Hart in a movie that might prove to be a  thrilling drama.

The movie focuses on the rise and fall of Senator Hart, who captured the imagination of young voters and was considered the overwhelming front-runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination when his campaign was sidelined by the story of an extramarital relationship with Donna Rice.

American experienced its first taste of tabloid journalism while political journalism merged for the first time. Senator Hart was forced to drop out of the race – events that left a profound and lasting impact on American politics and the world stage.

The movie is available on Blu-ray/DVD and is streaming as well. So, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, nows your chance or you can see it again.  I recommend seeing the movie because Hugh Jackman is such a brilliant actor.

Also starring Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, and Alfred Molina, The Front Runner is written by Matt Bai & Jay Carson & Jason Reitman, based on the book “All the Truth is Out” by Matt Bai.

The featurette captures the feel of the movie.

The movie trailer depicts the era when Gary Hart’s fiasco occurred. Today, this type of situation seems to happen once a month. When in fact, Hart’s is the first ever for ruining a political career.

The second poster shows more of the story behind the movie. Jackman looks to the side and tries to avoid being hounded by the press or the situation that is out of control.

Watching the trailer and knowing Reitman, I sense a bit of wit and sarcasm.

Interesting and Absolutely Lowest “Patriots Day” Teaser Trailer

Directed by Peter Berg, Patriots Day is about the after-effects of an undefinable act of terror. Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders, played by Mark Wahlberg, joins gutsy survivors, first responders, and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they attack again.

The movie interlaces the stories of Special Agent Richard Deslauriers, played by Kevin Bacon, Police Commissioner Ed Davis, played by John Goodman, Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, played by J. K. Simmons, and nurse Carol Saunders, played by Michelle Monaghan. This a horrendous story that chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most high-level manhunts in law enforcement history and the strength of Boston’s people.

Based on a true story, so it is enticing. The cast is brilliant and guided by a true to the core director who worked with Wahlberg on Deepwater Horizon.

“Renegades” Trailer

Directed by Steven Quale, Renegades is about a team of Navy SEALs on an assignment in war-torn Europe. They discover a treasure of gold at the bottom of a lake. The treasure is rumored to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

To help the locals, they go rogue and engineer a heist to retrieve the gold and return it to its rightful owners. But in a deadly turn of events, the enemy detects them and left with only 10 hours to carry out their mission.

The film stars J. K. Simmons and Sullivan Stapleton and is an original story written by Richard Wenk & Luc Besson.
