Marvel Studio brings us another group of superheroes based on the Marvel Comics, Thunderbolts.
Jake Schreier directs a well-thought-out cast who play misfits. Florence Pugh, who plays Black Widow, is the center of attention in the storyline—at least in the first trailer.
The ensemble cast also includes David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan and Hannah John-Kamen.
Zach Braff wrote and directed A Good Person. The film follows Daniel, played by Morgan Freeman, who inevitably comes together with Allison, played by Florence Pug.
Allison was once a thriving young woman with a bright future. She then became involved in an unimaginable tragedy that killed Daniel’s daughter.
As grief-stricken, Daniel navigates, raising his teenage granddaughter while Allison seeks redemption. They discover that friendship, forgiveness, and hope can flourish in unlikely places.
Braff also wrote, directed and starred in Garden State, starring Natalie Portman. His films are poignant with lovely dialogue.
The rest of the cast includes Molly Shannon, Chinaza Uche and Celeste O’Connor.
Allison is a young woman about to be married whose life devolves into addiction and confusion after the car she’s driving is involved in a deadly crash that kills her soon-to-be sister- and brother-in-law. Daniel is a former New Jersey police officer and recovering alcoholic who was to be Allie’s father-in-law before her engagement to Daniel’s estranged son, Nathan, was called off.
Meeting by chance at an AA meeting, Daniel and Allie begin an awkward but healing path to understanding. When Allie meets Daniel’s teenage granddaughter Ryan, orphaned by the car accident, she takes more complicated steps toward peace and forgiveness.
But as Allie — living with her mom, Diane, who has her red-wine-and-pill dependence — finds her need for painkillers getting more intense. Her decision-making abilities affected this story of redemption, friendship, and courage, which tackles other contemporary issues.
“I wanted to take on grief and addiction and a story about people standing back up after tragedy,” says Braff. “And I wanted to find a way to tackle it with some humor and heart.”
“I was eager to explore that idea and write a story about how we move on,” Braff continues. “I also wanted to write about how often the people that guide us in life or save us from ourselves are often not the people you’d necessarily expect to fill that role for us. That’s certainly been true in my own life.”
Braff’s experiences inform much of A Good Person, including losing several friends and family members since 2020, he says. “I wrote this script over the course of the pandemic, during which, like everyone else, I was feeling confused and scared. In the past four years, I’ve lost people close to me — a friend as well as the child of another friend to COVID; my father; my sister; and, recently, someone who took his own life, which happened after I wrote the screenplay, but that added to all of these feelings being in my consciousness.”
“I was looking to write about grief and especially how people can learn to stand up after grief,” explains Braff. “I wanted to write about not just my grief but the people I’ve watched who’ve been at the forefront of tragedy and how at first, it seemed impossible for them to move on. But then they were able to stand, then take steps forward, and slowly were able to function again.”
Says Pugh, “We all know when we’re being our best selves in our lives, and who made us into that. When reading Zach’s script, I leaned into the idea that Allison didn’t want to go there — she didn’t want to remember how good her life was before the accident. Something I felt the need to connect with in terms of the character was for Allison to feel — and in a way, enjoy — the pain and loss of what she once had as a form of self-destructive payment. She’s trying to feel, in some way, worse in order to make herself feel better.”
A Good Person also tackles how people can easily access and become dependent on opioids to numb physical and emotional pain. The pain this has brought to Americans of all types is part of the film’s tapestry, as is the prevalence of other kinds of addiction — and the importance of support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.
Christopher Nolan continues to bring poignant moments in history to the big screen. Oppenheimer follows the journey of developing the most powerful yet dangerous element that potentially can wipe out Earth and the human race — the fission of the atom.
Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer works with a group of scientists during the infamous Manhattan Project, which leads to the development of the atomic bomb.
The cast includes Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, Robert Downy, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock and Matt Damon as Leslie Groves.
Directed by and starring Olivia Wilde, Don’t Worry Darling is a clever twist on living in an experimental community. The story follows Alice, played by Florence Pugh, who grows suspicious of her husband, played by Harry Styles, and his company is hiding disturbing secrets.
The story by Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke and Katie Silberman is a psychological thriller that goes deep into the obscurity of hidden secrets to manipulate those unsuspecting victims.
Also starring are Gemma Chan, Kiki Lane, Nick Kroll and Chris Pine.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow is about Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johansson, in her quests between the films Civil War and Infinity Wars.
Ned Benson and Jac Schaeffer co-wrote the screenplay based on Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Don Rico comic books.
Rachel Weisz and David Harbour play critical roles in the movie – Weisz as Melina Vostokoff and Harbour as Alexei Shostakov and Red Guardian.
Weisz’s most recent role was in The Favourite, and she is married to James Bond, Daniel Craig. David Harbour played the Sheriff in Stranger Things and played Hellboyin the remake.
Black Widow is Shortland’s first major movie, though it looks like she directed a couple of arthouse movies.
Not a lot of information about the movie, so we watch the trailer to figure out what is happening in the story. It looks like the Black Widow goes home and spends time with her family.
The TV spot is 90 seconds long, almost the length of a trailer, and it contains what is in the above trailer and a little bit more.
I am impressed with these presentations, and I am hoping for a great movie.
Based on the perennial novel by Louisa May Alcott and written for the screen and directed by Greta Gerwig, Little Women comes to the movie houses once again with Saoirse Ronan in the lead role as the Alcott’s distinctly other-self, Jo March.
Most of you are familiar with Gerwig’s Lady Bird, where Ronan played Lady Bird, a teenage girl trying to find the meaning of life through a coming of age and innocence. Gerwig also casts another alumnus from the movie, Timothée Chalamet, who plays the neighbor Laurie.
Jo reflects back and forth in her fictional life as Gerwig crafts the beloved story of the March sisters. They are four young women, each determined to live life on her terms, which is timeless and timely.
The sisters in the movie include Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. New York Film Critics Circle (2019) awarded Laura Dern Best Supporting Actress for both Little Women and Marriage Story.
Gerwig tight directing brings new life to Little Women, as you can see in this clip.
I like this movie clip because it’s clean and smooth, and the message is clear.
The movie shot beautifully, love Dern as the mother.
I love this clip with Letts. It’s so good.
The next set of featurettes tells the story of making the movie.
Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Little Women comes to the movie screen once again with a stellar cast of women and a couple of men. Many renditions of the classic book have come to us over more than 100 years of moviemaking.
The first adaption of Little Women was a British silent film in 1917 starring Gaiety Girl Ruby Miller. In 1918, U.S. silent film starred Dorothy Bernard. The first talking movie starred Katherine Hepburn and directed by George Cukor in 1933. The second movie starred June Alyson and Elizabeth Taylor with Mervyn LeRoy directing in 1949. The third starring Wyona Ryder in 1998. Then, a modernized version in 2018 starring Melanie Stone.
Gerwig, who directed the sleeper hit Lady Bird, crafted Little Women in a way the draws both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott. The movie unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life.
In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her terms — is both timeless and timely.
Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.
Gerwig’s signature filmmaking shines through with stunning backdrops and charming costumes.
Written and directed by Stephen Merchant, Fighting With My Family is based on a true story. The movie follows WWE Superstar Paige, played by Florence Plugh, whose family is tight-knit about wrestling.
Paige and her brother Zak, played by Jack Lowden, are ecstatic when they get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to try out for WWE.
Paige earns a spot, and her brother didn’t win a place. She begins the competitive training program and leaves her family. She faces the new, cut-throat world alone.
Paige’s journey pushes her to dig deep, fight for her family, and ultimately prove to the world that what makes her different is the very thing that can make her a star.
Merchant is best known for his work as a screenwriter for television. He wrote quite a bit for the popular series The Office.
The casting includes Lena Headey, Nick Frost, Vince Vaughn, and Dwayne Johnson.
The two movie clips give a feel for what to expect from the movie. Comedy is one of them because I don’t believe “The Rock” is like he is portrayed in the film. Unless I am wrong, which I am known to be from time to time.
The extended movie clip is no longer available. It showed how a WWE celebrity made it into the arena and became famous. From what I see, so far, I like it. The pace is a bit slow, but it’s funny. The movie is now available on Blu-ray/DVD or streaming. If you are a WWE fan, you need to see this movie or see it again.
Paige shares moments when she first met Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. She talks about WWE and her family and how that relates to the movie.
The second interview with Paige is at The Sundance Film Festival screening. She is more down-to-earth and seems more relaxed and approachable. Her endearing persona shines through to us, though the interview is much shorter.
“The Underdog Story” featurette shows a great movie. We get the jokes, the angst, and the competition.
Here is the final trailer, and it is a bit raunchy but funny.
Here is another clip of the famous phone call to Paige’s family. It shows how crazy her family gets sometimes.
Directed by William Oldroyd, Lady Macbeth occurs in rural England in 1865. Don’t let the title fool you. It has nothing to do with Shakespeare. The story is about a woman who is trapped in a loveless marriage to a much older man and begins a passionate affair with a man her own age
The movie is adapted from Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novel Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. The director’s debut weaves a storyline that is nothing new, but the trailer seems intense, not revealing too much like most trailers do these days.
