“The Northman” Epic Tale with Powerful Cast

Directed by Robert Eggers, who wrote the screenplay with Sjon, The Northman follows a Viking prince, Amleth, played by Alexander Skarsgard. Amleth’s mission is to revenge his father’s murder, which becomes his journey from a child to an adult.

The movie takes place in Iceland during the turn of the tenth century.

Young Prince Amleth, played by Oscar Novak, is on the cusp of becoming a man when his father, played by Ethan Hawke, is brutally murdered by his uncle, Claes Bang, who kidnaps the boy’s mother, played by Nicole Kidman. Fleeing his island kingdom by boat, the child vows revenge.

Two decades later, Amleth, played by Alexander Skarsgard, is a Viking berserker raiding Slavic villages, where a seeress, played by Bjork, reminds him of his vow to avenge his father, save his mother, and kill his uncle.

Traveling on a slave ship to Iceland, Amleth infiltrates his uncle’s farm with the help of Olga, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, an enslaved Slavic woman — and sets out to honor his vow.

Eggers also directed The Witch, Anya Taylor-Joy’s first movie, The Lighthouse, comes an immersive Viking epic featuring an ensemble cast including Willem Dafoe.

“This is a big, muscular adventure, grander in scale than his previous films,” says Willem Dafoe, who co-starred in The Lighthouse and played the court jester Heimir the Fool in The Northman. “But Robert approaches it with the same kind of detail, creating sets, props and even shots that are made with such precision and care that the pretending on the part of the audience becomes effortless. Inside each shot of this movie, there is a rhythm and a story and a dynamic that’s beautiful on its own. Everything’s there on (the) screen; you don’t simply enter Eggers’ worlds — you get folded into them.”

“The Black Phone” Rings Deadly to Save Young Boy

Co-written and directed by Scott Derrickson, The Black Phone is about a dead phone that keeps ringing to save a kid’s life.

The horror movie follows Finney Shaw, played by Mason Thames, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy abducted by a sadistic killer, played by Ethan Hawke, and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

No stranger to horror, Derrickson’s other credits include the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

C. Robert Cargill co-wrote the script based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller, “20th Century Ghosts,” a compilation of his short stories.

Ethan Hawke’s career covers acting, directing, and producing, with Oscar and Tony Award nominations for his acting. He’s also a novelist and wrote a graphic novel.

“Juliet, Naked” Trailer, Movie Clips, and Poster

Directed by Jessie Perez, Juliet, Naked follows Annie, played by Rose Bryne, the long-suffering girlfriend of Duncan, played by Chris O’Dowd.  Duncan is not willing to commit to a relationship, get married, settle down, and have children.  Added to that, Duncan is obsessed with Tucker Crowe, played by Ethan Hawke, a faded, singer-songwriter.

Annie starts and unlikely transatlantic romance with Duncan after making an obvious cliche statement about his recent comeback song.  The trio conflict begins and the story unfolds.

The movie is based on Nick Hornby’s novel. Hornby two other books, About a Boy, and High Fidelity were both made into movies as well. He seems to capture the romantic tug with a spice of realistic comedy.

The movie credits a handful of screenwriters to adapt the book including Perez’s sister Evgenia. Evgenia has worked with her brother on another occasion with the movie Our Idiot Brother.

The movie is streaming and is available on Blu-ray and DVD. Now is your chance to see it or see it again.

The movie clip shows the dark side of Crowe with a conflict between Crowe and Duncan about to start. We also find out about Crowe’s several relationships resulting in children.  But, his son is such a cutie.

I like the flow of this next movie clip where we can see the chemistry formulating between the three characters.

The interesting movie clip is rough but spontaneous.

The trailer pretty much tells you the story without giving away the ending.

“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” Trailers and Clips

When the movie first arrived, the teaser trailer didn’t say much about the movie, but as it says in the trailer: if you know the gothic novel, you know what the movie is about.

Based on the classic graphic novel series Valerian and Laureline and directed by Luc Besson, Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets is a contemporary, unique, and epic science fiction saga.

The imagery looks imaginative and breathtaking. The movie stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, and Kris Wu.

This is a fantastic featurette. You gotta watch it.

I find the original master recording by The Beatles fitting for the movie trailer.  The without instrument or accompaniment version adds beauty to the visual effects, though it doesn’t explain the movie’s story very well.
