In the musical Westside Story, Maria sings Stephen Sondheim’s lyrical song “I Feel Pretty” while she fancies herself with a new dress, “I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity any girl who isn’t me tonight.”
Written and directed by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, I Feel Pretty is far from like Maria’s song. The story follows Renee Barrett, played by Amy Schumer, who doesn’t feel pretty or looks like the ingenue in a Sondheim musical.
Yet, according to her own measures, Renne struggles with insecurity because she is not the perfect woman.
Like a Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, she wakes from a fall, believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. Her new confidence empowers her to live fearlessly. Watch the movie trailer, and you will see how fearlessly she lives. So, as the old saying goes, “Is beauty only skin deep?”
The critical point of the fairy tale is what happens when she realizes her appearance never changes.
The Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming are happening now. You can catch it on Amazon if you haven’t seen it yet.
It’s a cute clip about being pretty from the inside out.
The movie also stars some stellar talent: Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski, Tom Hopper, and Lauren Hutton.
